Making Sense of Testing
There has been an unprecedented explosion in the availability of tests for healthy people. These are marketed to diagnose a range of conditions and spot diseases before any symptoms appear. The promise of instant results and ‘piece of mind’ can seem very attractive. However, there is no system to provide doctors or the public with information on performance or usefulness of these tests, some of which are based on flimsy scientific evidence.
